Sector(s)

Appoimnted by The Surveyor's Co on behalf of Primafruit to undertake a technical assessment and option appraisal study for the replacement of refrigerant plant and equipment at their fruit and vegetable distribution facility at Enterprise Way, Vale Business Park, Evesham.

Primafruit were reviewing the effectiveness and risk associated with the original DX refrigeration plants that provided cooling to their building, which due to their age, were beginning to incur a significant cost to maintain a reliable cooling system.

Anthony White Consulting Ltd appraised the options for refrigerationb plant modification, replacement and upgrade, considered a variety of refrigerant types that included HFC refrigerants such as R32, CO2 and Ammonia, their benefits and disadvantages, space requirements, H&S implications, environmental impact, energy efficiency and life cycle.

Additionally, we assessed, the captal expenditure, operational and running costs along with the environbmental impact before selecting the most appropriate refrigeration system and refrigerant for the application.

Key Points

  • Installation of new equipment that utilises a refrigerant that has low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and which requires a significantly reduced refrigerant charge to that which is existing, meant that in addition to lower carbon footprint the operating costs would be less susceptible to the risk of high and fluctuating future HFC prices. And by utilising refrigerants that were more efficient than those existing, smaller units would be able deliver the same capacity. Thus, achieving the benefits of reduced equipment cost, plant space requirements and lower future operating costs.
